Scenius Series proudly present The Silt Trio, led by the pioneering American bassist and composer Luke Stewart, performing in Greece for the first time on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at ROMANTSO. Recognized by DownBeat Magazine as "one of the 25 most influential jazz artists of his generation," Stewart is set to deliver an electrifying night of avant-garde jazz in Athens, joined by Chicago drumming legend Chad Taylor and renowned saxophonist Brian Settles.

The three musicians share a deep musical connection, performing with seamless synergy and the ease of longtime collaborators. Free from stylistic constraints and deeply rooted in the spirit of free jazz, their debut album, The Bottom (2022, Cuneiform Records), showcases The Silt Trio’s unique ability to blend free improvisation with dynamic compositions. In May 2024, they released Unknown Rivers (Pi Recordings), pushing the boundaries of jazz even further with an emphasis on rhythmic acuity and rich sonic textures.

Beyond his work as a bassist and saxophonist, Luke Stewart is a composer, producer, DJ, event organizer, writer, academic, and researcher, making him one of the most dynamic figures in Washington D.C.'s music scene. His influence extends beyond the local landscape, shaping contemporary music internationally. With an astonishingly wide-ranging career, a casual observer of the Washington D.C. music scene could easily get the mistaken impression that there are four or five guys coincidentally named Luke Stewart. He is a core member of multiple groundbreaking projects, including Irreversible Entanglements, Exposure Quintet, Blacks’ Myths, Heart of the Ghost, and Remembrance Quintet. Among the most in-demand collaborators, Stewart has performed with some of the most innovative musicians in jazz and experimental music, including David Murray, Nicole Mitchell, Moor Mother, Jaimie Branch, Nate Wooley, and Ken Vandermark.

Opening act: SMOOP

Opening the night is SMOOP, a quartet formed in Portugal in February 2024 by Yiannis Anastasakis, Niki Kokkoli, Simos Riniotis, and José Lencastre. The group recently completed its first tour across Lisbon, Porto, Parede, and Athens, where they also recorded their debut album. This will be their third performance in Greece, featuring saxophonist Fausto Sierakowski as a special guest.

A night of bold jazz exploration you won’t want to miss!
